Mad Max: The Dangers of Safe Game Design

The excellently written article below highlights the dangers of non-innovative game design.  According to most reviewers and players, Mad Max is a boringly safe game dependent on gameplay mechanics done better elsewhere.  The combat is a worse version of the Batman Arkham games.  The sandbox is mediocre and the main character is grim to the point of absurdity.

Games should be looking to push the envelope, like Metal Gear Solid IV has, rather than fall victim to cookie cutter design.
